Designing an Effective Donate Form (Brad Frost)

I reached out to the Pittsburgh Food Bank last year about helping them redesign their website largely because I was having a hard time figuring out how to give them money. So as part of our redesign of the Pittsburgh Food Bank’s website, we want to make the donate experience more visible and usable. (bradfrostweb.com)

The Look Of Funny: How The Onion's Art Department Works (Dan Nosowitz)

An Onion article titled “New Law Enforcement Robot Can Wield Excessive Force Of 5 Human Officers” includes a remarkable bit of artwork, which you can see above: a muscled, armored tank-like robot armed with guns and probes and sprays and hammers, using all its weaponry to attack the business-casual-clad attendees of a beige-carpet trade show. To create it, The Onion’s art department built a digital robot, staged the scene with real people, then combined original photography and digital art with pre-existing stock photography to achieve a perfectly surreal, violent scene. All to illustrate a joke that can be told in a 12-word headline. http://bit.ly/1lnhJQ6 (fastcodesign.com)

A guide to multi-DPI and platform design (Sebastien Gabriel)

DPI or Dots Per Inch is a measure of spatial dot density initially used in print. It's the number of ink drops your printer can put in an inch . A smaller DPI yields a less-detailed image. This concept is applied to computer screens under the name PPI for Pixels Per Inch. Same principle: It counts the number of pixels your screen can display per inch. The name DPI is also used in screens." http://bit.ly/XGLVeh (sebastien-gabriel.com)

The Peter Principle Explained (Rolf D.)

I was not a great laboratory technician. Some days I was so bored doing exactly the same thing that I would experiment with different ways of doing it. Good thing that I worked in a research laboratory and my playing around was useful. For most jobs, the traits necessary to be an outstanding entry-level worker are not the traits necessary to become an outstanding manager. This is the Peter Principle: Do a great job, and you will eventually be promoted until you reach your level of incompetence. (linkedin.com)

Why you must master mobile ecommerce (Caleb Mellas)

Since 2011, many in the design community have been pushing responsive design to our clients as a “nice-to-have” feature. But in 2014, reality has set in: a responsive website has become an essential part of any company’s online presence. One area of the Web that is way behind in terms of providing a modern, easy-to-use interface for customers is online retail. Many retailers, even large ones, have not invested the resources to build a responsive estore that works across all device sizes and forms. (webdesignerdepot.com)

A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Effective User Journey Maps (Armen Ghazarian)

In a world where you can reach your customers in so many different ways, how can you ensure consistently high levels of user experience across all of those channels? That’s a really daunting task. It requires a smooth and effective communication between multiple departments and a clear strategy. Fortunately, we have UX to bridge the gap between the needs of both product development and marketing teams, while also designing a delightful experience for the end users. (webdesignviews.com)

5 provocative views on usability testing (David Travis)

My view is that remote, unmoderated testing is actually less reliable than lab-based testing and that in some situations it's positively misleading. There are two reasons for this. (userfocus.co.uk)

Design Salaries Survey (Ivana McConnell)

When I first came across the results page of this survey, done by Cameron Moll, my first instinct was to try and visualise it somehow, to get some idea of how design salaries varied across continents, cities, and countries. Cameron hadn't had a chance to visualise it himself, and I had wanted to have a go with the HighCharts library for ages, so this seemed like an excellent opportunity. There were some interesting insights to be found in the data, and definitely encourage more surveys like this in the future. (ivanamcconnell.com)

A Call for Quality. Applying agile the right way at the right time (Zack Naylor)

Quality, like love or beauty, can often be in the eye of the beholder. It’s subjective to suggest that something has quality, yet, as designers, we strive for that very subjectivity in every product and service we create. The concerning thing, however, is that our industry as a whole has recently shifted focus to how quickly and efficiently we can arrive at such designs, showing less concern for quality. (uxmag.com)

"FAIL" (Aaron Draplin)

As much as I’d love to share some detailed, harrowing, goopy account of me falling flat on my face, complete with shame, despair, grief, and maybe some “rising from the ashes,” instead, I’m gonna offer up some pointers. I'm from the Midwest, and back there, there’s no room for rash decisions. (adobe.com)

ROI Of Usability (Megan Wilson)

We all know that investing in usability is essential for creating a simple and intuitive experience for the customer. But some may not consider this enough to justify the costs associated with usability design. However, there are a variety of other benefits that provide a great Return on Investment (ROI) on your usability investment. In addition to the most immediate but hard-to-measure benefits to the user experience, investing in usability offers concrete quantitative benefits for your business. (usabilitygeek.com)

Basic Colour Rules for Web Designers (Anamaria)

There’s an ongoing debate about how humans perceive colours. Some say that nobody sees the exact same colours as someone else, but that by perpetuating what we’ve been taught by our parents or grandparents we’ve just somehow managed to reach somewhat of a common ground. So, in theory, green looks the same to everyone because we’ve been told it’s the colour of plants in spring and summer and blue is also safe, because it’s the colour of the sky during midday. Still, the way we categorize shades of the same colour is still a topic that is always open for debate and can sometimes lead to lengthy and heated arguments. (topdesignmag.com)

The case for making libraries full of toys and games (Angela Tung)

American businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie’s public library legacy was built on a boyhood dream: to acquire knowledge. Carnegie believed in “the meritocratic nature of America,” that anyone “with the right inclination and desire could educate himself” and therefore succeed, and that libraries should contribute directly to that. The Only Consumer That Matters. Who is really a customer of yours? (Mitch Joel)

I often get to hang out backstage at conferences and events. When you have that kind of access to other speakers, business leaders and authors, it would be silly not to take advantage of it. So, I do. I ask them questions. I prod them. I engage them. I do my best to not be a pest, while at the same time, I see these as moments that should never be wasted. (twistimage.com)

How Fonts Affect the User Experience (Marcus Taylor)

Several years ago, researchers at MIT confirmed through a study that fonts can impact how we feel: A bad font can make us frown unconsciously, while a good font can make us feel happy. If fonts can influence our emotions, then they can certainly impact the user experience. A few weeks ago, I decided to find out how much of an impact fonts have on UX. (sixrevisions.com)

Five Shocking Facts That Will Change Your Entire Approach to Social Media (Neil Patel)

Social media is fraught with legend, hysteria, and mass confusion. Because of its intensely personal nature, we tend to approach social media with a lot of strong feelings about its effectiveness, lack thereof, best practices, and how things should be done. (kissmetrics.com)
