Imagine this – you are playing a video game and want to interact with the other character. But, instead of using the mouse, you simply rest your eyes on that particular character and almost instantly, you get a response from it. Wouldn’t that be outstanding? Eye-tracking replacing a task usually performed by the mouse! (usabilitygeek.com)

The world continues to go mobile. And in the process, designers, programmers and product stakeholders continue to ask questions about the mobile landscape, from demographics to usage. We first presented a number of facts and insights in 2013. Here's an updated version with some new additions and a look back on how accurate some of the 2013 projections were. I've again included as many sources as possible so you can double check our conclusions. (measuringu.com)
Pop Quiz: Are you using hashtags in your online marketing campaign? If you answered yes, do you know why they are important? And do you know how they relate, if at all, to the SERP? If you’ve passed over the hashtag because you view it as a fad, it’s time to revisit the concept. If you randomly add hashtags to your social posts as if you’re adding a dash of salt to your fries, it’s time to add some strategy to your hashtag game. (kissmetrics.com)

This post is a brief follow-on to a great post by Tristan Kromer in which he describes what he calls the Lean Waterfall. In the lean waterfall, large organizations still maintain their silos (e.g. design, engineering and marketing). Within each silo, they practice agile and lean. However, between the silos there are still handoffs and large specification documents. As such, in the end what you have is an organization that looks like the graph below; with each departmental silo claiming to be lean, but at the super-ordinate level the organization is still functioning as a waterfall. Ever had a moment on the internet when you’ve been forced to stop and think about what you’re doing? Maybe you’ve been surprised. Maybe you’ve stumbled across something new. Maybe you’ve come to see things in a different light. I call such experiences meta-moments: tiny moments of reflection that prompt us to think consciously about what we’re experiencing. So far, Droid Serif was the default font for reading books on Google Play. Earlier in May, Google quietly introduced a new typeface to replace it along with the release of the latest version of PlayBooks. Google introduced Literata, a well-balanced serif font family that was designed for readability on screen. (designer-daily.com)
There is a fundamental disconnect between what many publishers sell, and what their customers want. Publishers value and sell reach and demographics while their customers value and need campaigns that measurably increase sales pipelines. Today’s publishers need to be able to measure the full impact of client campaigns from initial awareness through to a final sales transaction. (hubspot.com)

I often explore and read patents and papers from the search engines to try to get a sense of how they may approach different issues, and learn about the assumptions they make about search, searchers, and the Web. Lately, I've been keeping an eye open for papers and patents from the search engines where they talk about a metric known as the "long click." (moz.com)

On PCs (or smartphones, or TVs) computer operating systems have a lot of user interface elements and conventions in common. So it's really the differences in each OS that define their unique personalities. Wearables are no different as my recent companions between Android Wear and Apple Watch help illustrate. (lukew.com)

Have you ever asked for an update on a project you’d invested a great deal of time and energy in, only to hear “they have completely redesigned it since then”? I did, and it left me with this very empty feeling. After some wallowing, I realized I needed to discover a new way to think about the way I work and what really matters in my consulting career. My answer: The mark of a truly good consultant is investing in people. Focusing on investing in people will ensure that your work will still continue to see results long after the application is redesigned, and that is change that matters in the long run. At e-commerce sites the filtering interface has historically consisted of a left-hand vertical sidebar. However, over the last couple of years a new filtering and sorting interface has become increasingly popular: a horizontal toolbar which combine both filters and the sort tool. In fact our Product Lists & Filtering benchmark reveal that of 50 top US e-commerce sites 24% have ditched the traditional filtering sidebar in favor of a combined horizontal filtering and sorting tool (similar to the one in the image above). How would you define an entrepreneur? I have always broken it down like this: An entrepreneur is someone who has a vision for a specific industry that does not yet exist, and has the ability to bring that business to market successfully. Yes, it leaves plenty of room for interpretation. Yes, it is not all-encompassing. I was once asked to judge an awards program for entrepreneurs. A lot of the businesses were second or third generation owners. I discounted them. I got in trouble for doing so. The argument - on the other side - was that these individuals really took the business to the next level, another level or a whole other space. Fantastic. I agree that these individuals are highly successful and talented, but I also felt like they were entrepreneurial... but not the entrepreneurs. One of the nuances (for me), is that the entrepreneur has the initial idea to start a business, and takes on the risk and leverage involved in taking this idea to market (and growing it). Everything after that is entrepreneurial. (twistimage.com)
A blinking cursor on a blank page is a terrifying sight for a writer. It’s like having arachnophobia and someone putting a spider in your hair. The struggle is, in fact, real. The good news is that, as marketers, we have it easy. Customers are telling you what they want to hear, and it’s only a matter of listening to what they’re saying. Sounds simple, right? I can practically hear everyone mentally (or maybe actually) murmuring, “Duh.” (marketingsherpa.com)

Today that's clearly not the situation with food in every corner shop, but the behaviour is still ingrained in our genes and we can't shake it off easily. If we take the example of hard-workers who may contest that they are not lazy, the fundamental reason for their effort to climb up the career ladder is money which equates to being able to purchase our core needs (water, food, sex, shelter and protection against danger), so perhaps being a career-person is the laziest choice for attaining those essentials (rather than say building a house for yourself, digging a well to get water or hunting a caribou for hours). How easy is it for users to scan your form? If your form is hard to scan, it could take longer than expected for users to complete it. This leads to form abandonment and loss of potential sign ups. The way to avoid this is to make your fields quick to scan when users first see them and after they fill them out. (uxmovement.com)
