UX Blogs

Welche UX Blogs lest Ihr denn so?

The OmniGraffle UX Template has been updated. I finally got around to cleaning up the Persona example from the old version 1 (the urlgreyhot version), added a detailed persona, a site map example with diagramming style (.gdiagramstyle file), and a mental model example.

A Website's Anatomy

Dieser Link führt zwar nur zu einem einseitigen PDF, ist aber vielleicht durchaus brauchbar: Anatomy of a Usable Website.

Essentially, it's a road-map for what a typical, usable website might contain. It's not a design guide, per se - more of a cheat-sheet for the pieces that any site should consider having.

Eine gute Idee für ein Cheat Sheet.

Research for Personas

Das hier ist ein guter, einführender Artikel zum Thema Personas: User Research for Personas and Other Audience Models.

Personas are archetypal representations of audience segments, or user types, which describe user characteristics that lead to different collections of needs and behaviors.

Sind ein paar gute Hinweise dabei.

Distributed Scrum Teams

You're only a first-time user once.

We’ve all got our own personal benchmarks for what makes a good user experience. My personal list includes a few: Does it delight me? Will I recommend it to my friends and colleagues? Would I have used the same approach if I had designed the product? I’ve found among some product executives one particular pattern for this subjective evaluation criteria that is both humorous and troublesome: “Would my mother/grandmother/Luddite Uncle Bill be able to use this product on the first try?”

How do designers come up with an interface that's not in your face? That just does what you want and doesn't make you waste time doing what it wants? Easy-to-use software doesn't just happen. It requires focusing on the product's potential users from the very beginning and checking at each step of the way with these users to be sure they like and are comfortable with the final design. The User-Centered Design (UCD) process starts with the formation of a multidisciplinary UCD project team. This team will work with the product's users throughout the design process and beyond.

Eine wunderbare Montagslektüre, was?

Deutsche IA Konferenz ausverkauft

Infographics

Das hier ist ein wunderbarer Sonntags-Link, liebe THS-Leser: 50 great examples of infographics.

Absolut sehenswert.

European Commission: user-centred innovation

Die Europäische Kommission hat offenbar vor, sich eingehender mit dem Thema Design as a driver of user-centred innovation zu befassen.

The Commission staff working document on Design as a driver of user-centred innovation provides an analysis of the rationale for making design an integral part of European innovation policy. The questions below are based on the document. Their aim is to find out whether more should be done at EU level in the area of design and if so, what.

A Visual Approach to Web Usability): The Value of Web Forms and Design Constraints.

When you are trying to get a message across you begin by adding elements. Often the design process turns a corner and you are adding information or design elements for the sake of the design. A better approach may be adding only the items necessary at a minimum to get the point across. If you can balance this practice with the business needs of the organization, you’ve found a winning design.

Interfaces Magazine

Die neue Ausgabe des Interfaces Magazine ist da (Ausgabe 78).

Interaction publishes Interfaces, the award-winning quarterly magazine with features, events, reviews and jobs. Interfaces is available in print for members and as downloads for everyone else.

24. April 2009

Mental Models

Ich bin über diesen recht interessanten Artikel gestolpert: Using Mental Models in Learning.

Do we consider mental models of our learner before we design training? Is this necessary? Let us first understand the concept of mental models better. Mental models is a person’s perception of reality and how they understand a particular concept.

Popular Typefaces

IA Guardians

Liebe THS-Leser, hier habe ich mal wieder einen feinen Link für euch geangelt: Introducing Information Architecture at The Guardian.

New web products for the guardian.co.uk site are mostly developed by the in-house technology team. As a general rule of thumb, editorial and production teams come up with ideas of what they want to achieve. Product Managers then scope out projects. The design process involves dedicated web graphic designers, alongside input from the newspaper's art direction team. These designs are delivered as pixel-perfect PDFs. The product definition and the design are then broken down into individual tasks or stories, and the software engineers pair program in an agile methodology to deliver the product.

Paper Prototyping

Oh, dieser Artikel muss mir im März durch den Aufmerksamkeitsfilter gerutscht sein: Improving the transition from paper to Photoshop.

Your paper prototype is meant for you to plan out layouts, structures, shapes and forms. Leave the fine details of how a button will be shaded or the pixel structure of an icon to when you get on Photoshop. While you’re working on paper, focus on the bigger picture of how things will fit together.

22. April 2009

Usability in Practice

Das hier ist ein sehr interessanter Artikel vom Microsoft MSDN Magazine: Usability in Practice - Useful, Usable and Desirable: Usability as a Core Development Competence.

Fourteen years ago, in his book About Face, Alan Cooper made a distinction between two software models: the technical model and the manifest model through which the software "represents its functioning to the user." I prefer the term UI Model to Manifest Model, but whatever term you use, it's an important distinction.

Ein schöner Artikel für den Feierabend.

Agile: The Sprint Review

The Sprint Review: Mastering the Art of Feedback.

The sprint review in Scrum is a critical part of the inspect and adapt cycle. Having worked with many teams and organizations, I have noticed an overall reluctance (and in some cases fear) to do them in the way they were intended.

Eine wirklich gute Beschreibung von Sprint Reviews.

21. April 2009

Roles and Structures

Das hier ist ein wirklich lesenswerter Artikel: UE – roles and structures – and the iterative evaluation processes.

In this post I’ll call attention to one, of various, way to define some organizational roles relevant to UE and the iterative development. I would like to appoint these roles to appropriate people and organize them into the overall structure of a development process.

Die Diagramme im Beitrag sind ebenfalls sehenswert.

Google News Timeline

Kennt Ihr schon die neue Google News Timeline?

Ganz neu im Google Labor.

Agile for Business Persons

Liebe THS-Leser, hier habe ich mal was schönes für euch: What Every Business Person Needs To Know About Agile Software Development (PDF, 12 Seiten).

Quality and technical excellence require talented and dedicated teams. Yet we all know about projects that went astray even with a great group of highly skilled developers, and we all know of great successes pulled off by otherwise average folks. Who is on the team matters. How the team approaches its work may matter even more. I’m not going to sugarcoat this—process is important.

Falls Ihr also überlegt hinzugehen, solltet Ihr euch bald anmelden. Sehr viele Plätze sind schon verkauft... äh, vergeben.

20. April 2009

The State of Interaction Design

Der allseits beliebte Sender IA Television beginnt die Woche mit einem tollen Beitrag: Dave Malouf - The State of Interaction Design.

Durchaus sehenswert.

Studying: Tagging and Folksonomy

Eben bin ich aber über diesen Artikel gestolpert: Studying Social Tagging and Folksonomy: A Review and Framework.

This paper reviews research into social tagging and folksonomy (as reflected in about 180 sources published through December 2007). Methods of researching the contribution of social tagging and folksonomy are described, and outstanding research questions are presented. This is a new area of research, where theoretical perspectives and relevant research methods are only now being defined. This paper provides a framework for the study of folksonomy, tagging and social tagging systems.

Hier geht es direkt zum PDF (42 Seiten). Von den 42 Seiten sind etwa 20 (!) reine Referenzen. Das PDF ist also garnicht soo lang ;)

Good User Interfaces

There is a lot of information out there about various interface design techniques and patterns you can use when crafting your user interfaces and websites, solutions to common problems and general usability recommendations. Following guidelines from experts will likely lead you towards creating a good user interface — but what exactly is a good interface?

Your Design: A Visual Approach to Competitive Reviews.

A common activity at the outset of many design projects is a competitive review. As a designer, when you encounter a design problem, it’s a natural instinct to try to understand what others are doing to solve the same or similar problems. However, like other design-related activities, if you start a competitive review without a clear purpose and strategy for the activity, doing the review may not be productive.

Wirklich lesenswert.

Analysis through Deconstruction

Deconstruction is one of the most frequently used and fundamental analysis techniques in our toolkit. It is used as both a preparatory technique to get research data ready for use in other ways; and a powerful technique in its own right as a method of isolating, exposing, and testing assumptions deeply embedded in our mental models.

18. April 2009

Laws of Customer Experience

The 6 Laws of Customer Experience (PDF, 11 Seiten).

If you want to improve customer experience, then it might seem obvious that you should focus completely on customers. For most firms, though, that's not the correct approach. Where should you focus? On employees.

UX Australia 2009 is Australia’s premier user experience design conference, with inspiring and practical presentations, covering a range of topics about how to design great experiences for people.

Also beieilt euch, falls Ihr dabei sein wollt :-)...

Design with Intent Toolkit

Liebe THS-Leser, hier habe ich mal wieder was wunderbares für euch: The Design with Intent Toolkit v.0.9.

The Design with Intent Toolkit aims to help designers faced with ‘design for behaviour change’ briefs. The poster features 12 design patterns which recur across design fields (interaction, products, architecture), and there are also 35 more detailed here on the website. Some of the names will be unfamiliar, but we hope the patterns and examples will be understandable, and inspire your own concepts.

Unbedingt anschauen.

Usability of Doors

Das hier ist recht lustig: The Evolution of Door Usability.

It’s not a push door. It’s a pull door. There is no sign to indicate this and now you’ve broken the illusion that you are a suave and sophisticated individual. You curse the high heavens and wonder aloud why the door chose to thwart you, and why there are so many different ways to open a door now that there is no standard.

IA and Government Web Sites

Dieser kurze Artikel ist beim O'Reilly Radar erschienen: Practical Tips for Government Web Sites (And Everyone Else!) To Improve Their Findability in Search.

Architecting sites to be search engine friendly, particularly sites with as much content and legacy code as those the government manages, can be a resource-intensive process that takes careful long-term planning.

Ein lesenswerter kleiner Beitrag.

Wireframe Icons

Icons can be helpful for providing visual cues for functions in user interfaces. [...] This is a set of grayscale cursors and icons that come in handy when designing wireframes. The icons are designed to work well with your wireframes.

Web design is all about conveying information to the users in the most direct, clean and usable manner. A corporate website also needs to capture the feel of the company and its purpose, while remaining professional in order to attain a solid and lasting impression to its customers.

Schauts euch mal an :)

iPhone Axure Library

I have created an iPhone prototype with Axure RP, as I have not been able to find any good resources elsewhere (even though I'm sure most of you guys already have one). The current version has been created for Axure 5.5 and will not work with previous versions.

Designing for UX

It's All About The Whole Package...Designing for the User Experience.

Now certainly, the user interface is one important aspect of the user experience, but UX is much more than just what the screens look like and what the user sees. I'm an advocate of taking a holistic approach to the art and science of application design. I want every aspect of the process to be all about the user...making them happy and productive.

13. April 2009

Uselessnism

Diese Präsentation ist vielleicht was für die Ostertage: Uselessnism on the Web, at BarCamp.

Moving images have an overpowering effect on human peripheral vision. This is a survival instinct from the time when it was of supreme importance to be aware of any saber-toothed tigers before they could sneak up on you. These days, tiger-avoidance is less of an issue, but anything that moves in our peripheral vision still dominates our awareness: it is very hard to, say, concentrate on reading text in the middle of the a page if there is a spinning logo up in the corner.

Unterhaltsam und lesenswert :)

SMO (Social Media Optimization)

Das hier ist ein sehr interessanter Artikel: Presenting: 10 of the Smartest Big Brands in Social Media.

As we battle a global recession, corporations are looking for new ways to sell their products and engage their consumers. Many have turned to the Internet, with Social Media in particular, to market their goods. Let’s take a look at 10 companies that have done a phenomenal job of taking advantage of social media platforms.

11. April 2009

Usability Test Videos

Sehr schöner Beitrag auf Userfocus:How to create a usability test highlights video you can be proud of.

There’s no shortage of software that will record videos from usability tests, but how do you put the clips together in a way that will convince management and the design team to take action on your results? Our solution is to use the rule of 5: Create 5 separate highlights videos each focusing on one usability issue, with each issue comprising 5 clips and with each video lasting 5 minutes or less.

10. April 2009

Interview with Travis Schmeisser

Das ist hier genau das richtige für euch, liebe THS-Leser: Interview with Travis Schmeisser of nGenWorks.

Designing websites is an art form as much as it is a science. That’s why here at the UXBooth, we like to occasionally take a break from sharing our opinions and highlight the experiences of others. This month, we’ve asked Travis Schmeisser of nGen Works to share insights from his company’s trade. nGen Works is a design and interface development establishment based in Jacksonville, Florida.

The UX Team Sport

Hier ist ein interessanter Artikel von Peter Merholz: Why Designing Products and Services is a Team Sport.

In the world of services, make sure your project teams are multichannel. Coordinate in-person, online, phone, and mail interactions and communications. Recognize that your customer doesn't distinguish between channels they way you do, and make sure she's satisfied no matter how she chooses to engage.

Nichts Neues, aber durchaus lesenswert.

Frohe Ostern

9. April 2009

The special Generalist

Bei SitePoint ist ein lesenswerter Blogbeitrag erschienen: Specialist vs. Generalist: Who Wins?.

There are advantages to being in both groups, but I think the only way to be truly successful is by being a little of both. You can be a specialist, but in order to be able to develop a profitable business (of course, depending on what your specialty is), you may need to be able to supplement your specialty services with some add-on services that may not be exactly in line with your focus.

Was seid ihr? Spezialist? Generalist? Oder Spezial-Generalist? ;-) ...

Deutsche IA Konferenz: Fast ausverkauft

Was uns natürlich alle sehr freut :)

8. April 2009

What is Graphic Design?

Free UX Templates.

The templates are derived from the User Experience toolkit I designed for the DUX team at Provoke. So we’ve given you the basic tools - it’s now up to you to do the magic with the actual user experience.

Hört sich gut an. Es scheinen hauptsächlich Visio Templates zu sein.

SlideShare: Design Specifications

Tabbed Navigation

Der UX Booth hat mal wieder was interessantes zum Thema Navigation: Tabbed Navigation, and What Makes it Useful.

Navigating the web is a very unusual act when you think in these regards: there isn’t quite anything like it we can relate to in real life. In the real world, you walk or drive somewhere with a physical presence you can observe. On the internet, you teleport across expanses of unknown size.

Sehr schöner Blog-Post.

7. April 2009

Pathway Pages

Ein schöner Feierabendartikel ist vielleicht folgender: Good pathway pages.

Your website is just a series of inter-linked pages, but some of those pages are very different from others. In this post, I’m going to talk about pathway (or gateway) pages. Pathway pages are pages that your users experience on their way to finding the information they need.

Nette Lektüre, mit ein paar guten Beispielen :) ...

Chinese Social Networks

Dieser TechCrunch Blog-Post ist wirklich lesenswert: Chinese Social Networks ‘Virtually’ Out-Earn Facebook And MySpace: A Market Analysis.

Social networks are taking off in China. The following guest post by George Godula. David Li, and Richard Yu explores how Chinese social networks are pursuing different business models than their American counterparts, relying more on micropayments and the sale of virtual goods.

The everyday tasks in our lives are being revolutionized by technology. One task that technology is helping to simplify is shopping: the task of buying products in stores is just not as convenient as online shopping.

Für Profis ist nichts Neues dabei. Für Einsteiger, aber ein lesenswerter Artikel.

IA Summit 09 Plenary

In this IA Summit Closing Plenary, given without slides while wandering amidst the audience, Jesse examines what he has learned at the conference, he thoughts on the nature of the discipline and the practitioner, and gives bold, perhaps even shocking advice for the future direction of information architecture.

Hörts euch unbedingt mal an.

Web Trend Map 4 - Final Beta

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is an area of research and practice that emerged in the early 1980s, initially as a specialty area in computer science. HCI has expanded rapidly and steadily for three decades, attracting professionals from many other disciplines and incorporating diverse concepts and approaches. To a considerable extent, HCI now aggregates a collection of semi-distinct fields of research and practice in human-centered informatics.

Der Artikel beleuchtet die Geschichte und Herkunft von HCI.

Berlin IA Cocktail Hour

Happy 4.04 Day

Heute ist ja bekanntlich der vierte April (4.04) - also der Happy 404 Day... :-).

One of the worst part of website till sometime back used to be its 404 error page but now things have changed for good. The designers themselves don’t like the weird 404 error pages and that is perhaps major reason why these less frequently seen pages are sporting some color and statement. Let’s take a look at some of the beautiful and simple 404 error pages.

Wirklich sehenswert.

Short Video: Lou Rosenfeld

Neulich habe ich dieses alte Video mit Lou Rosenfeld wiederentdeckt: Lou Rosenfeld: Social Media for Push & Pull Advertising.

Lou Rosenfeld discusses how he uses social media such as weblogs to create a presence for his books before they are even published and then uses promotional surveys to develop influence maps of the niches he is selling to.

You can start to detect and rationalize patterns, and all of a sudden you’re painting a much clearer picture of business information. Designers can transfer their specialized skills from interaction design to the business domain.

Sehr gutes Interview.

Safari 4 Beta

In the end, I think prefer Safari to Firefox, at least on OS X — though it’s very, very close, and I’m making sacrifices whichever browser I pick. The UI in Safari is clean and coherent. It feels like it’s part of OS X — it feels integrated and fast.

Next Berlin IA Cocktail Hour

Designing to Sell .

In this post we’re going to look at a simple template you can follow if you need to create a design that “sells” - that is, creating a website landing page that intends to turn a viewer / user into a customer. This is a concept that we have applied successfully to client projects in the past and is now something that we use in our own products.

Ein sehr anschaulicher und guter Blog-Beitrag.

Statistics for Clients

Das hier ist ein netter, kurzer Artikel: How to Sell Statistics to Clients.

In my experience, the loudness or frequency of a person’s request for web statistics is inversely proportional to their understanding of them.

Sind ein paar gute, kleine Tipps dabei.

Footer Usability

To Include for a User Friendly Footer.

The information that you do put in your footer can give users an opportunity to discover important information on your site and can be a great navigation tool and part of a really important first impression.

Ich kann allen Punkten nur zustimmen. Eine gute Zusammenfassung.

Questions you should ask

Das hier ist ein netter Blog-Post: Four questions every software user interface designer and usability professional should be thinking about.

Design and engineering must work well together if we want design cemented in the overall software development process. Many perceive design as being oriented towards a waterfall approach, costly, and a “nice to have, but not necessary”. We must change these perceptions by repeatedly producing better results through close work with software engineers. Agile processes, whether strictly or loosely followed are the most promising framework for design and engineering to come together and pave the way for future software products and superior user experiences.

Wohl war! :)

Get Creative

Hier ist mal wieder so einer: Breaking The Design Cycle: Get Creative To Be Creative.

Designers, we have a problem. It seems we have forgotten how to be creative. It is true, the very nature of what we do is based on creativity, however more often than not we tend to be swept away by the latest trends or “what’s hot” rather than seeking out fresh inspiration.

Free Usability Papers

Das hier ist eine nette Liste von Usability-Dokumenten... und der Titel ist ja auch recht vielversprechend: 15 Valuable Usability PDFs You Never Heard Of.

I thought I'd list a few helpful papers I use from time to time when going about my usability work. Some of these you may have heard of, some not. I think you'll find these very helpful from time to time. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, rather, it's the list of the most thumb-worn papers I leaf through when needed. They are all free, and are publicly available.

Sollte man sich unbedingt anschauen.

Journal of Information Architecture

Heute sollte theoretisch das Journal of Information Architecture erschienen sein. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt.

Its aim is to facilitate the systematic development of the scientific body of knowledge in the field of information architecture. The long term goal of the journal is to serve as a forum for new research and sharing of good ideas and case studies that are useful to the field's researchers, practitioners, students, and all other interested parties.
