Berlin IA Cocktail Hour

On Bad UI

Einfach runterscrollen).

The trade-offs between elements adjacent in space versus stacked in time are always in the mind of a UI designer. Placing many elements on the same screen reduces the need for navigation and gives users a comprehensive feeling of “it’s all at my command.” Moving focus from one element to another is instant and seamless. On the flip side, separating elements onto different screens slows things down with navigation while increasing clarity.

Prototype with Pencil

The Pencil Project - Sketching and Prototyping with Firefox.

The Pencil Project's unique mission is to build a free and opensource tool for making diagrams and GUI prototyping that everyone can use. Pencil will always be free as it is released under the GPL version 2 and is available for virtually all platforms that Firefox 3 can run. The first version of Pencil is tested against GNU/Linux 2.6 with GTK+, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

There is no data, there is only XUL.

Prototype with Balsamiq

Desktop applications, Web 2.0 sites, Rich Internet Applications, Web sites and Web Applications. The line between them is blurring, and Balsamiq Mockups can help you design any and all of them.

Moderating Usability Tests

In diesem aktuellen UIE Podcast geht es um die Moderation von Usability Tests: Usability Tools Podcast: Moderating Usability Tests, Part 1.

The usability test moderator has a lot of influence on the success of the test. Moderating isn’t rocket science, but you’ll need to understand the basics before you sit down with your users.

Reinhören lohnt sich. Ein wirklich guter Podcast.

Pace Layering

Das hier ist eine gute Lektüre: From Pace Layering to Resilience Theory: The Complex Implications of Tagging for Information Architecture. PDF aus dem Jahr 2006.

In this paper, we suggest that pace layering theory, when combined with complexity theory and resilience theory as practiced in ecological studies, can provide a model of interaction between folksonomies and conventional information architecture that is based on the complex interactions of productive revolt that characterize adaptive systems. This model can help us to define a broader role for information architecture, in which we combine research and practice to develop a working sense of productive change and development in information environments.

Design Thinking

Das hier ist ein guter, aber langer Artikel in der Harvard Business Review: Design Thinking (Thinking like a designer can transform the way you develop products, services, processes—and even strategy).

Edison’s genius lay in his ability to conceive of a fully developed marketplace, not simply a discrete device. He was able to envision how people would want to use what he made, and he engineered toward that insight.[...]Edison’s approach was an early example of what is now called “design thinking”—a methodology that imbues the full spectrum of innovation activities with a human-centered design ethos.

Eine wunderbare Sonntagslektüre.

Treecrumbs

Tree Menu + Breadcrumbs = Treecrumbs.

Hier ein paar Titel aus dem Programm: Apple, Ikea and their integrated Information Architecture (Davide Potente, Erika Salvini), Change is Inevitable – what Semantic Web and Web 3.0 mean for IA (Claudia Urschbach, BBC), Commercial Ethnography and Innovating Information Experiences (James Kalbach, LexisNexis), Concept Design Tools for Information Architecture (Victor Lombardi), Content Analysis: The Hows and Whys to Understanding Your Content (Chiara Fox, Adaptive Path) oder Frameworks are the Future of IA: A Case Study and Example (Joe Lamantia) - um nur ein paar zu nennen.

Universal Design

Eine theoretische und recht lange Betrachtung von Universal Design (aka Inclusive Design) gibt es hier: Adopting the Universal Design Approach Instead of the Stigma That Creates Poorly Accessible Enviroments.

The idea behind Universal Design is to create products and services that can be usable for people of all ages and physical abilities. As well as consumer products, this approach is also applied to industrial products, communications technology, buildings and the built environment – in fact anything that is designed to be used.[...]Universal Design can be thought of as a contemporary philosophical movement that addresses trends in the growth of the aging population and diversification of user abilities around the world.

Der Artikel ist nicht uninteressant. Kategorie: philosophisches Hintergrundwissen und Barrierefreiheit - oder so ;-).

Bruno Argento

Very inspiring was his lively description of what he considers the ‘real’ frontiers of interaction - cultural, social and legal practices - and how urbanware or everyware is just another layer that gets added to these practices, so he couldn’t resist ending with a ‘little list’ on the future frontiers of ‘ware’.

Via The Swarm.

Famous Paper Prototypes

Das hier ist ein guter Artikel: The Paper Version of the Web - auch berühmte Websites fingen einmal als eine Papierskizze an.

People have been sketching user interfaces since the birth of the web (possibly even before) but the sketches usually stay locked away in old notebooks and discarded bar napkins in Austin, Texas.[...]We don’t usually get to see this handmade stage of the web, but some folks have been thoughtful/narcissistic enough to upload photos of their UI sketches, and I find them fascinating.

IA Diagrams

Eine kleine aber feine Sammlung von IA relevanten Diagrammen: IA Diagrams (Flickr).

A collection of diagrams that I have posted on www.userpathways.com. These may be useful to help convey your work to clients, colleagues and friends.

Sind ein paar sehr schöne Bilder dabei.

IxDA Berlin

New (Meta) Search: Viewzi

Viewzi is a whole new way to experience search. Instead of one big list, you get nice visual Views tailored for the content you are looking for.[...]We think there are better ways to present information than in a simple list. We start with specific topics or search terms and ask: “Is there a better way to present this data?” The result? Dozens of new, unique ‘views’, or ways to look at information, each custom-tailored for that content. It’s the right data, presented in the right way.

We put together a series of grids for Axure based on the 960-grid system. This grid system works well for web pages that assume a target monitor of 1024 x 768. The file contains grids for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12 and 16-column layouts.

From Context to Conversion

Showing Products in Context.

Show Items in Use. Prevent Disappointment, Build Trust & Minimize Returns. Illustrate Benefits. 40 GB and 80 GB means nothing to me, but I can understand the difference between 20,000 and 40,000 songs. You can make your product images sell for you by thinking through the best ways to show how your products are incredible or solve a customer’s problems.

101 Photoshop Tips in 5 Minutes

Agile UX

Das hier ist ein wirklich sehr interessanter Beitrag: Twelve emerging best practices for adding UX work to Agile development.

If the user experience practice in your company was weak before Agile, Agile development isn't going to help things. If your user experience practice was strong before Agile, it'll remain strong after Agile, and evolve to adapt.

Ein wirklich guter Artikel. Lesen lohnt sich. Via 404uxd.
