Podcast: Agile Web Development

Tim Keirnan interviews Jeff Patton at User Interface 13 in Cambridge, MA, on October 15th, 2008, after Jeff's full-day seminar "Bringing User-Centered Design Practices Into Agile Development Projects".

Flow disturbance

Auf Experience Matters ist ein kurzer Beitrag mit Namen A Disturbance in the Flow erschienen.

The problem with surveys is that they create a “disturbance in the flow” not unlike a “disturbance in the force” to quote a bit of popular culture. So we’ve got a marketing, design and experience problem on our hands here. How do we include surveys without disrupting the entire experience?

Good Headers

Make Your Headers More User Friendly.

Effective headers connect with a user faster, and help users understand the flow of content without much thought.

If a big corporation designed the stop sign.

Here’s the newest installment in the modern genre of "what-if" videos about advertising and design. This time, it's, “What if a major corporation designed the stop sign?” It’s pretty clever...

Wirklich sehr nett gemacht.

Axure Widget Libraries

The Icons from Axure custom widget library (for Axure RP Pro 5.5+) contains over 250 commonly used icons that you can use in your Axure RP prototypes. Two versions of the library are available, one contains 16x16 px icons and the other 32x32 px icons. These icons are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. You are free to use them in Axure RP prototypes without attribution. The icons were designed by KeyIcons.

Prototyping with Fireworks

Interaction Patterns

Jeffrey Zeldman Understanding Web Design

Author and Happy Cog founder Jeffrey Zeldman answers the question: what does a web designer need most? Skills and knowledge of software, of course, but empathy—the ability to think about and empathize with your user—is by far the most important. Good useful education is hard to find, and within companies there is often no departmental standardization. Good graphic design is not the same as good user experience design, he explains. In fact, “good web design is invisible”—it feels simple and authentic because it’s about the character of the content, not the character of the designer.

Wirklich guter Beitrag.

On Wireframes

Hier ist ein interessanter Artikel: Shades of Gray: Wireframes as Thinking Device.

For me, wireframes act as a form of ‘thinking device’ for the setting and exploration of a given problem space – in this example, a home page for a cruise line operator. To understand the utility of wireframes it is important to understand the nature of designing.

WPTS '08

Looking at bad web site design is valuable because it give us the opportunity to learn from other people's mistakes without having to make them ourselves.

Schaut mal kurz, ob was von euch dabei ist ;-)

All men make mistakes, but only wise men learn from their mistakes. (Winston Churchill)

M-banking in urban India

Hier ist eine Veröffentlichung, die demnächst im Asian Journal of Communication, erscheint als Preprint zu lesen: Mobile banking and economic development: Linking adoption, impact, and use (PDF, 24 Seiten).

Around the globe, various initiatives use the mobile phone to provide financial services to those without access to traditional banks. Yet relatively little scholarly research explores the use of these m-banking/m-payments systems. This paper calls attention to this gap in the research literature, emphasizing the need for research focusing on the context(s) of m-banking/mpayments use. Presenting illustrative data from exploratory work with small enterprises in urban India, it argues that contextual research is a critical input to effective “adoption” or “impact” research.

Eine recht gute Sonntagslektüre, wie ich finde.

Users want control

The industry spends billions on usability testing and user interface design. Unfortunately, that money is mostly wasted. [...] When you ask someone what they really want, they won't tell you the truth because they're not aware of the truth.

Louis Braille

Peter White tells the story of Louis Braille, the founder of Braille, and the story behind his invention, in the light of new technology for the blind, which threatens to make it redundant.

Januar 1852 in Paris (Quelle: Wikipedia).

Der Beitrag ist wirklich sehr hörenswert.

Beautiful Concept Maps

We create concept maps, a type of model, to explore and learn about complex information spaces. By showing everything—the forest and the trees—in a single view, concept maps help people create mental models and clarify thoughts. We create concept maps to share understanding.

The Best New Design Blogs of 2008.

The Design community really exploded in 2008 with many rich new blogs. [...] For this reason, I’ve collected the Top 9 New Design Blogs to follow in 2009. In short, these are blogs that have made a strong impact in the design community in a short amount of time.

Sehr gute Liste.

On Findability

Are you Losing Traffic from Poor Findability?

I’m not so sure Moreville quite had in mind what I’d like to talk about in this post. I’d like to discuss the importance of making your website findable given the current conditions of our web ecosystem. If you’re not easily findable, you’re missing a huge slice of potential visitors. You’re talking to a void instead of an audience.

Sind ein paar interessante Punkte darunter. Übrigens: Peter Morvilles Buch zum Thema Findability ist wirklich sehr lesenswert: Ambient Findability: What We Find Changes Who We Become.

UX Tools

The tools we use to solve design problems are profoundly important to the outcome. [...] I’ve been designing interactive products for over twenty years, and I’m always trying to find more efficient ways to solve design problems. [...] So with that in mind I thought it would be helpful to share what tools I have settled on for interaction design and information architecture.

User Experience 2008

Die usabilitynews.com bringen heute einen ganz netten Rückblick: 2008 in Review: Developments that rocked the world of User Experience .

When it comes to software, user experience can evolve very rapidly. This time last year, for example, multi-touch was a new term and software-as-a-service (SaaS) was still synonymous with Salesforce.com. Now gesture-based mobile devices are the norm, and most companies that provide services using software, are pursuing a SaaS strategy. So today I wanted to look back at 2008 and highlight some of the key developments that rocked the world of what users experience.

Air Force Blogging Rules

Was wäre die Welt ohne Regeln? The Air Force’s Rules of Engagement for Blogging.

You’ve probably seen many articles on companies and organizations saying that they take social media seriously. Here’s one such organization that you might not expect: the United States Air Force. Take a look at the Air Force Blog Assessment chart.
