Ethnographie

Auf harvardbusiness.org ist neulich diese kurze Betrachtung vom Stellenwert der Ethnographie in Unternehmen erschienen: Ethnographic Research: A Key to Strategy.

Ethnography is the branch of anthropology that involves trying to understand how people live their lives. Unlike traditional market researchers, who ask specific, highly practical questions, anthropological researchers visit consumers in their homes or offices to observe and listen in a nondirected way. Our goal is to see people’s behavior on their terms, not ours.

...I decided it was time to really get into the nitty-gritty of what it means to practice user experience in an Agile environment.

Living in the cloud

Karel Vredenburg schreibt auf seinem Blog aktuell was zu Designing for the Cloud.

Many of these apps have not based their designs on well-proven user interface design patterns. As a result, they are quirky and often lead to user errors.

Besonders schön finde ich diesen Satz: these apps have better availability than the power to our homes. In other words, I've had more power outages to my home than Gmail being down.

At Amazon and Microsoft

Working at Amazon and Microsoft.

A summary of my working career at Amazon as Website manager and Microsoft as CGM Product Manager.

How to shape your influence

The foundation of influence is your network of relationships in the organization. Effective influence is best when your relationships are both focused and wide.

Wirklich sehr guter Beitrag.

Agile Design Cycles

Agile development is all the rage, but it has been frequently stated by UI advocates that agile development encompasses design processes that don’t work well together. In some cases I have found this to be true and in others you have to adapt your own design processes to just work better. In this first article I will outline a few techniques that can help you cope during the pre-project planning stages.

At its root, SEO is an inexact science. It's a world where we follow best practices and use our best judgment to make decisions on what to do next.

Remote Usability Testing

Mit dem Thema Remote Usability Testing befasst sich dieser kurze Blog Beitrag: Is All Remote Usability Testing The Same?

Rex Hartson in 1996, defined remote usability testing as the method “wherein the evaluator, performing observation and analysis, is separated in space and/or time from the user”.

How to Create Effective Personas for Your Projects, Part 1.

The persona is so important because it affects so many other pieces of the project -- discovery, design, QA, and even search engine optimization. A persona is the answer to the question "who are we doing all this work for?".

Mittlerweile gibt es auch schon den zweiten Teil zu obigem Blog Post: How to Create Effective Personas for Your Projects, Part 2.

Understanding Search

“What constitutes a successful search?” I always ask this question during field research and usability tests. Of all the responses I get, there are two key answers I always hear: “Finding what I’m looking for” and “Unexpected finds”.

Problems with Pagination

These links hide content. There’s no way of knowing what’s behind each of the links until you click them, so you have to either click through every link or start guessing. This can cause problems for users, especially when there are a lot of pages to look through.

On Ethnography

Ich bin über diesen interessanten Artikel gestolpert: Ethnographic Research: A Key to Strategy.

Corporate ethnography isn’t just for innovation anymore. It’s central to gaining a full understanding of your customers and the business itself. [...] Our goal is to see people’s behavior on their terms, not ours.

Netter, kurzer Beitrag.

TDD and Usability

Schöner Artikel für den montäglichen Nachmittag: How Test-Driven Development Increases Overall Usability.

Usability isn’t just for your users. Today’s development environments have matured into a very practical, agile hybrid. By writing tests before developing, developers increase the speed and resourcefulness of the development process. The impact is profound. By being more robust, applications themselves can become paragons of usability, and user-experience professionals can derive benefit.

Wirklich interessant. Sind ein paar gute Infos dabei.

A to Z

Na, bei so was schlägt doch wohl jedem Informationsarchitekten das Herz höher: A to Z Index Examples.

An A to Z index is a great way to deliver large amounts of alphabetized information. They can, however, be difficult to design and implement correctly. Thanks to members of IAI and a recent email thread going around, here are a few examples of websites and how they implement an A to Z index.

Es sind ein paar sehenswerte Beispiele darunter.

Bible Diagrams

Parti drawings

Luke Wroblewski, stellt einen aktuellen Vortrag als PDF zur Verfügung: Parti & The Design Sandwich (24 Seiten, PDF).

This combination of design principles at the top and design considerations at the bottom allows interaction designers to fill in the middle with meaningful structures that enable people and organizations to interact, communicate, and get things done.

Whatever limits us, we call Fate

There’s been a lot of talk about how in down-times like these when you might be having a hard time finding work, that investing in yourself is the best thing you can do. Which I say is absolutely true. I want to try and take the idea a step further with a practical resource on how people can go about doing that.

Schauts euch mal an :-)

Your intelligence is measured by those around you; if you spend your days with idiots you seal your own fate.

IBM: User-Centered Design

User-Centered Design.

Easy-to-use software doesn't just happen. It requires focusing on the product's potential users from the very beginning and checking at each step of the way with these users to be sure they like and are comfortable with the final design. The User-Centered Design (UCD) process starts with the formation of a multidisciplinary UCD project team.
