eCommerce Usability

The everyday tasks in our lives are being revolutionized by technology. One task that technology is helping to simplify is shopping: the task of buying products in stores is just not as convenient as online shopping.

Für Profis ist nichts Neues dabei. Für Einsteiger, aber ein lesenswerter Artikel.

IA Summit 09 Plenary

In this IA Summit Closing Plenary, given without slides while wandering amidst the audience, Jesse examines what he has learned at the conference, he thoughts on the nature of the discipline and the practitioner, and gives bold, perhaps even shocking advice for the future direction of information architecture.

Hörts euch unbedingt mal an.

Web Trend Map 4 - Final Beta

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is an area of research and practice that emerged in the early 1980s, initially as a specialty area in computer science. HCI has expanded rapidly and steadily for three decades, attracting professionals from many other disciplines and incorporating diverse concepts and approaches. To a considerable extent, HCI now aggregates a collection of semi-distinct fields of research and practice in human-centered informatics.

Der Artikel beleuchtet die Geschichte und Herkunft von HCI.

Happy 4.04 Day

Heute ist ja bekanntlich der vierte April (4.04) - also der Happy 404 Day... :-).

One of the worst part of website till sometime back used to be its 404 error page but now things have changed for good. The designers themselves don’t like the weird 404 error pages and that is perhaps major reason why these less frequently seen pages are sporting some color and statement. Let’s take a look at some of the beautiful and simple 404 error pages.

Wirklich sehenswert.

Short Video: Lou Rosenfeld

Neulich habe ich dieses alte Video mit Lou Rosenfeld wiederentdeckt: Lou Rosenfeld: Social Media for Push & Pull Advertising.

Lou Rosenfeld discusses how he uses social media such as weblogs to create a presence for his books before they are even published and then uses promotional surveys to develop influence maps of the niches he is selling to.

You can start to detect and rationalize patterns, and all of a sudden you’re painting a much clearer picture of business information. Designers can transfer their specialized skills from interaction design to the business domain.

Sehr gutes Interview.

Safari 4 Beta

In the end, I think prefer Safari to Firefox, at least on OS X — though it’s very, very close, and I’m making sacrifices whichever browser I pick. The UI in Safari is clean and coherent. It feels like it’s part of OS X — it feels integrated and fast.

Next Berlin IA Cocktail Hour

Designing to Sell .

In this post we’re going to look at a simple template you can follow if you need to create a design that “sells” - that is, creating a website landing page that intends to turn a viewer / user into a customer. This is a concept that we have applied successfully to client projects in the past and is now something that we use in our own products.

Ein sehr anschaulicher und guter Blog-Beitrag.

Statistics for Clients

Das hier ist ein netter, kurzer Artikel: How to Sell Statistics to Clients.

In my experience, the loudness or frequency of a person’s request for web statistics is inversely proportional to their understanding of them.

Sind ein paar gute, kleine Tipps dabei.

Footer Usability

To Include for a User Friendly Footer.

The information that you do put in your footer can give users an opportunity to discover important information on your site and can be a great navigation tool and part of a really important first impression.

Ich kann allen Punkten nur zustimmen. Eine gute Zusammenfassung.

Questions you should ask

Das hier ist ein netter Blog-Post: Four questions every software user interface designer and usability professional should be thinking about.

Design and engineering must work well together if we want design cemented in the overall software development process. Many perceive design as being oriented towards a waterfall approach, costly, and a “nice to have, but not necessary”. We must change these perceptions by repeatedly producing better results through close work with software engineers. Agile processes, whether strictly or loosely followed are the most promising framework for design and engineering to come together and pave the way for future software products and superior user experiences.

Wohl war! :)

Get Creative

Hier ist mal wieder so einer: Breaking The Design Cycle: Get Creative To Be Creative.

Designers, we have a problem. It seems we have forgotten how to be creative. It is true, the very nature of what we do is based on creativity, however more often than not we tend to be swept away by the latest trends or “what’s hot” rather than seeking out fresh inspiration.

Wirklich ein guter Beitrag.

IA Konferenz 2009

The annual German IA Konferenz is the principal German language IA event, drawing attendees and speakers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and beyond. In 2009, it will be held in Hamburg on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17, at the prestigious Empire Riverside hotel.

Content Heavy Web Design

Das hier sind ein paar sehr gute Tipps: 10 User Friendly Tips for Good Content Heavy Web Designs.

The majority of the population is now using the internet as there main resource, instead of print. Therefore, it is extremely crucial for news sites to have user friendly designs. Here are 10 universal tips that will help you design content heavy websites.

Der Artikel lässt sich sehr gut überfliegen. Surft mal vorbei, wenn ihr Zeit habt.

Free Usability Papers

Das hier ist eine nette Liste von Usability-Dokumenten... und der Titel ist ja auch recht vielversprechend: 15 Valuable Usability PDFs You Never Heard Of.

I thought I'd list a few helpful papers I use from time to time when going about my usability work. Some of these you may have heard of, some not. I think you'll find these very helpful from time to time. This list is not meant to be comprehensive, rather, it's the list of the most thumb-worn papers I leaf through when needed. They are all free, and are publicly available.

Sollte man sich unbedingt anschauen.

Journal of Information Architecture

Heute sollte theoretisch das Journal of Information Architecture erschienen sein. Ich bin schon sehr gespannt.

The Journal of Information Architecture is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal. Its aim is to facilitate the systematic development of the scientific body of knowledge in the field of information architecture. The long term goal of the journal is to serve as a forum for new research and sharing of good ideas and case studies that are useful to the field's researchers, practitioners, students, and all other interested parties.
