Form Follows Function
Jeder kennt den Satz form follows function. Formuliert vom amerikanischen Architekt Louis Sullivan, Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts.
Die Form sollte aus der Funktion folgen.
It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic, of all things physical and metaphysical, of all things human and all things superhuman, of all true manifestations of the head, of the heart, of the soul, that the life is recognizable in its expression, that form ever follows function. This is the law.
Bei der Recherche zum nächsten 5Q Beitrag habe ich den original Text von Sulivan entdeckt.
Aus historischer Sicht ist der Text interessant zu lesen (wenn auch nicht ganz einfach zu verstehen). In Amerika des ausgehenden 19. Jh. hat die Entwicklung des Fahrstuhls den Bau von Hochhäusern ermöglicht. Sullivan äussert sich zu dieser neuen Art der Architektur.
