Social Search

Das hier ist ein wirklich lesenswerter Blog-Post: Social Search: Customers Influence Search Results Over Brands.

Even if your company is not active on Twitter, your customers can influence the search results related to your company –you must pay attention to this trend. Just as your company likely already has a search strategy through search optimization or paid search terms, you’ll need to extend micromedia to your strategy.

I’ve filled out a lengthy online form and hit the submit button only to find myself staring back at an empty form peppered with red errors. Has this happened to you? Of course it has. (...) The lack of strong error messaging is a regular issue I encounter as both a user and UX designer. As the bearer of bad news to users, error messaging can be the element that determines whether your app gets a “Sale” or “FAIL.”

Am besten Ihr hebt euch den Link für Montag auf - will euch nicht das verdiente WE verderben.

How to quality manage your creative process

The 10% Myth and How to Put Your Creative Process on Autopilot

If I learn and use a technique or process, I write about it and when necessary turn it into a set of tools that support the process. I record the steps in the system for re-doing without having to re-learn. I modify what I learn and borrow from others when what I've gleaned limits my ability to get things done.

1. Performance – What do users need or want to do in this information space? How do we measure successful performance? 2. Perspective – What is our focus? Are we focusing on who’s using the communication product, what they want from the product and their context? ...

Die Liste enthält einige gute Punkte.

Usability Testing: Myth and Reality

A List Apart: The Myth of Usability Testing.

Is a user who visits a series of pages doing so because the task flow is effective, or because he can’t find the content he seeks? Are users spending a lot of time on a page because they’re engaged, or because they’re stuck? While NYTimes.com surely hopes readers will stay on a page long enough to read an article in full or scan all its headlines, Google’s goal is for users to find what they need and leave a search results page as quickly as possible. A lengthy time-spent metric on NYTimes.com could indicate a high-quality or high-value article. For Google’s search workflow, it could indicate a team’s utter failure.

Usability Tools

Das hier ist ein guter Artikel: Three High-Tech Tools for Understanding Consumer Behavior.

Tracking online customer behavior has created a huge amount of data to be mined and analyzed. But when it comes to understanding offline, real world behavior, researchers typically use contextual methods such as ethnographic studies and user interviews. These methods are effective, but time-consuming.

Expert Reviews

Ich bin eben über diesen sehr interessanten Beitrag gestolpert: Usability Testing Versus Expert Reviews.

“As Steve Krug says, ‘It’s not rocket surgery.’ What you are after is not just opinions, but insights into how different people would react to and interact with a product. All you need is 5 or 6 people, for 1 hour each, in 1 day of usability testing. Have your team observe the tests, discuss what you saw, and decide how to use your insights to improve the design. If you aren’t sure what something means, repeat your test.

Der Beitrag ist eine Sammlung von Expertenmeinungen. Wirklich ganz gut und lesenswert.

Eyetracking

Ah, ein herrlicher Beitrag für die Mittagspause: Eyetracking: Is It Worth It?

It is easy to get excited about eyetracking. Seeing where people look while using your Web site, Web application, or software product sounds like an opportunity to get amazing insights into their user experience. But eyetracking is expensive and requires extra effort and specialized knowledge. The heat maps and other visualizations certainly look impressive, but what can you really learn from them?

Sehr lesenswerter Text, liebe THS-Leser. Schauts euch mal an...

Form fields

Do I have to answer this question? Mandatory versus optional fields.

The temptation for form owners is to declare all questions as mandatory; otherwise, why would you even ask the question? Indeed we encourage form designers to remove a question altogether if the resulting data is not actually going to be used.

What is UXD?

User Experience Design (UXD, UED), Interaction Design (IxD), User Interface (UI) Design and other web/application design professionals use the term User Experience Design to refer to the judicious application of certain user-centered design practices, a highly contextual design mentality, and use of certain methods and techniques that are applied through process management to produce cohesive, predictable, and desirable effects in a specific person, or persona.

Ein langer Blog-Post, aber durchaus lesenswert.

Mobile Gestures

Touch gestures are only one type of gestures for mobile. Technologies such as accelerometers, light sensors, other cameras, pressure sensors, RFID, NFC, Bluetooth, and various location technologies are all possible. Then there are the “display” mechanisms: vibration, rumble, electrical fields, force feedback, sound, and so forth.

Qualitative Research

Eben bin ich über diesen recht guten Blog-Post gestolpert: The essence of qualitative research: “verstehen”.

Folks, qualitative research does not worry about numbers of people; it worries about deep understanding. Weber called this “verstehen”. Geertz called it “thick description.” It’s about knowing — really knowing — the phenomenon you’re researching.

Der Post enthält auch eine SlideShare Präsentation zum Thema.

Hot in Social Media

Liebe THS-Leser, hier ist eine nette Lektüre für Euch für das Wochenende: 5 Must-Read Social Media Marketing Studies.

Twitter is not the only social networking site to report record usage numbers. In September, Facebook officially hit the 300 million-user mark, making the social networking site nearly as large as the U.S. population.

Eine gute Zusammenstellung von wirklich interessanten Beiträgen. Schaut mal rein.

Viel Erfolg.

Personas

Liebe THS-Leser, hier habe ich mal was richtig schönes für Euch: How to Understand Your Users with Personas.

Personas are a powerful tool for helping you to better understand the needs of your users. In this comic, drawn exclusively for Think Vitamin, you’ll learn more about Personas and how they’ll revolutionize the way you design and build web sites.

Error Messages

Auf UX Booth ist mal wieder ein guter Artikel erschienen: Handling User Error with Care: Getting Users Back on Track.

Each common error pattern needs its own custom error message. Doing this is low-cost and you will get very insightful information that can drastically improve results. For a brand new website, previous experience will help you to guess the kinds of errors that users will make.

Google's design

Heute früh bin ich über diesen sehr interessanten Artikel gestolpert: The secrets of Google's design team.

"We often will put things out on an experimental framework and look at how they perform, and use that to drive our design decisions. Search is the interface that most of our users are familiar with and so what goes into the search interface is really what drives our visual language.

From complex to clean

Im Smashing Magazine ist ja mal wieder was sehr gutes erschienen: Minimizing Complexity In User Interfaces.

Clean. Easy to use. User-friendly. Intuitive. This mantra is proclaimed by many but often gets lost in translation. The culprit: complexity. How one deals with complexity can make or break an application. A complex interface can disorient the user in a mild case and completely alienate them in an extreme case. But if you take measures first to reduce actual complexity and then to minimize perceived complexity, the user will be rewarded with a gratifying experience.

Was bedeutet schöne bzw. gute Gestaltung in Bezug auf Software-Bedienoberflächen eigentlich?
