Playing God

Das hier ist ein netter, kurzer Blog-Post: The Experience belongs to the User.

We all like to play God. We like to imagine that the design we create is ushered into the world and all those who use it have an epiphany…they do things exactly in the way we have prescribed. They approach, use, and experience our design in the manner we envisioned, resulting in an amazing user experience.

Wirklich eine schöne Montagslektüre.

Design Thinking Transforms Organizations

Ich lese ja gerade Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?: Inside IBM's Historic Turnaround - ein wirklich recht interessantes Business Buch.

Gerstner quarterbacked one of history's most dramatic corporate turnarounds. For those who follow business stories like football games, his tale of the rise, fall and rise of IBM might be the ultimate slow-motion replay. He became IBM's CEO in 1993, when the gargantuan company was near collapse. The book's opening section snappily reports Gerstner's decisions in his first 18 months on the job-the critical "sprint" that moved IBM away from the brink of destruction.

How Design Thinking Transforms Organizations and Inspires Innovation.

It’s like getting golf tips from Tiger Wood’s coach. Tim Brown’s firm IDEO has won more medals for innovative design than anyone in the world. If you want to be more innovative at work or in life, study with the coach of champions.

Holistic Browsing Trends

Das hier, liebe THS-Leser, ist eine sehr schöne Wochenendlektüre: Holistic Web Browsing: Trends Of The Future.

The future of the Web is everywhere. The future of the Web is not at your desk. It’s not necessarily in your pocket, either. It’s everywhere. With each new technological innovation, we continue to become more and more immersed in the Web, connecting the ever-growing layer of information in the virtual world to the real one around us. But rather than get starry-eyed with utopian wonder about this bright future ahead, we should soberly anticipate the massive amount of planning and design work it will require of designers, developers and others.

Nehmt also genug Visitenkarten mit :)

Interview with Andy Budd

When we started a lot of people in the UK didn’t know what UX was and a large part of our job was having to explain what UX meant, why it was different than Usability Testing or just regular web design. There was a lot of misunderstanding and even more importantly, people didn’t even know what proper web design was.

Art Of Design

The Dying Art Of Design.

Progress is good, but we need to make sure that we’re progressing in the right direction. Our fundamental skills and the craft of design have started to take a back seat. Using the right tools and techniques is certainly an important part of design. But do our tools and resources make us better designers?

Recht lesenswerter Text. Lest mal drüber, wenn Ihr Zeit habt.

Radio Johnny: Thomas Vander Wal

Johnny hat einen guten neuen Podcast veröffentlicht: Radio Johnny: Thomas Vander Wal Discusses Our History and Future.

Echt klasse.

Lenses in UXD

A design lens allows you to view the user experience through the eyes of a single design principle. Lenses were originally created for game design but are just as powerful for user experience design.

IA Konferenz News

Assumptions - 99% Bad?

Das hier ist ein sehr lesenswerter Beitrag: Dealing with Risky and Safe Assumptions.

One of the most important aspects of product development is the process of predicting the behavior of a product’s intended users. I’ve participated in ideation sessions with companies where designers, user researchers, and engineers were making major assumptions about what users would and wouldn’t be willing to do with their product, without performing any research. Of course, assumptions are important and useful. However, if not managed properly, they can definitely lead a project down the wrong path.

Ein guter Text der einen Blick lohnt.

It takes a village to raise a child

What I wish someone told me about freelancing.

Most people hire a designer because they have no idea what they want. It’s your job to work as their guide to design. Be ready to take them from point A to point Z in a time efficient and cost effective manor. Always let your client know that you are available to answer any questions they may have. Also, if they have an idea that you feel may not be the best, be prepared to tell them – but in a kind way that won’t make them feel as if you are blowing them off.

Interview with Andy Budd

Sehr lesenswert.

Over the last 2 years we started seeing clients get an understanding of UX and the value of what we do and started seeking us out directly, which is a really nice position to be in. A lot of that is due to the visibility of UX in the UK becoming much more prominent — more and more agencies are offering it as a service and more and more agencies claiming to be dedicated UX consultancies. People who are purchasing web design services now are much more savvy and understand that UX is a needed service.

Nette, kurze Lektüre.

Good Design

Das hier ist ein sehr interessanter Beitrag: The Value of Good Design - hier noch mal für all jene gepostet, die ihn noch nicht gelesen haben.

It’s not difficult to find examples of businesses with beautiful websites but no traffic. Businesses with stunning websites that fail because the product or service they’re providing just isn’t good enough. Design only goes so far, and ultimately cannot save a business if the product just doesn’t cut it.

Eine Lektüre die sich zu lesen lohnt.

Designing for Task Flow

Das hier, liebe THS-Leser, ist ein ganz interessanter Artikel und ein ebensolches Projekt von Johnny Holland: Perceived Affordances and Designing for Task Flow

In The Design of Everyday Things Don Norman introduced many designers to the concept of affordances, which he would later clarify as “perceived affordances”, or the actions the user perceives as being possible based on how an object is presented. For example, if your design includes a “button” make that button look pushable.

Das besagte Buch ist natürlich eine Pflichtlektüre.

Eye Tracking

Das hier ist eine sehr gute Samstags-Lektüre: Eye Tracking and Web Usability: A Good Fit?

On the one hand, it makes intuitive sense that knowing what people look at (or don’t look at) on a webpage would be useful in assessing the usability and effectiveness of that page. However, as is the case with many qualitative research methods, it has proven difficult to completely validate this assumption. Even if the methodology adds value to traditional usability testing, some usability practitioners have argued that this value is not justified by the additional cost of the eye tracking equipment, software, and training. This assertion is also difficult to prove or disprove, so it’s still the subject of debate.

Lesenswerter Artikel. Ach, wenn es Draußen nur regnen würde...

IA Konferenz: Gastreferent: Jason Hobbs

Measuring Task Time

Can you measure task time if users think aloud during a usability test? fragt ein sehr interessanter Artikel.

While it might seem like having users think aloud while they complete a task will increase the time on task—the literature is actually mixed. Some studies report no difference, some show longer task times for thinking aloud and others report faster task times for thinking aloud.

Eine schöne, kurze Osterlektüre.

Table UI

Many agree that tables are a phenomenon in user interface design: they are very important parts of user interfaces but often overlooked. Tables show structured data and their purpose is to make that data readable, scannable and easily comparable. The thing is that in many cases tabular data is obscured. This is why tables have bad reputation and many find them boring.

Sehr schön. Ist das schon die perfekte Oster-Lektüre?
